EPA-GLA+® – More than just fish oil!
EPA-GLA+® contains the long polyunsaturated Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which we usually only get from fish.
It is a comprehensive essential fatty acid complex product in combined with Borage oil and liquid lecithin extracted from 100 % non-GMO rapeseed oil. This unique composition gives a complete balance of Omega 3-6-7-9 fatty acids and phospholipids.
EPA and DHA are essential fatty acids in the sense that they must be supplied to the body in the same manner as for example vitamins, because the body cannot produce these essential building blocks itself, and supplementation is required.
The heart, brain and eyesight
EPA and DHA helps the heart to function normally, and this effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg of EPA and DHA (total). DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal vision and the normal function of the brain, and these effects can be achieved with a daily intake of 250 mg DHA.
The Omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid is also included in EPA-GLA+®. Linoleic acid contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. This effect is obtained with a daily intake of 10 g Linoleic acid. EPA-GLA+® contributes 1 g per. Suggested daily dose.

The enormous interest in fish oil dates back to the 70s, when the two Danes Bang and Dyerberg conducted a series of surveys among Eskimo-trappers in Greenland. After several expeditions to Greenland, they reported a noticeable difference in heart health between Greenlanders and Danes. Based on their studies the two Danes proclaimed the hypothesis, that Omega-3 fatty acids from the Inuit diet – a diet with a naturally very high intake of fish and marine mammals (especially seals and whales) had a beneficial effect on the heart. The observations caused an international sensation and was the start of a massive research on fish oil.
Be aware of the fatty acid form
With EPA-GLA+® you get Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil in their highest forms, or in other terms in the longest and most unsaturated forms – also known as EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). It is in the form of EPA and DHA, the omega-3 fatty acids are utilized by the body. They are part of all the body’s cell membranes, where they are important for cell function.
Consuming shorter, less unsaturated Omega-3 fatty acids, for example in the form of flaxseed oil, is not advisable, since these fatty acids must first converted in the body to the long, polyunsaturated EPA and DHA, before they have any beneficial effect. This conversion is dependent on many factors and in addition the conversion ability is naturally reduced with age.
GLA and phospholipids
EPA-GLA+® also contains medical borage oil and liquid lecithin. Borage oil has a naturally high in healthy Omega-6 fatty acid called GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) and Omega-9 fatty acids. Lecithin contains phospholipids, which are an important component of all cell membranes.
Phospholipids perform vital functions in the body, forming new cell membranes and maintaining existing cells. They can be described as “gatekeepers” to the cells by regulating transport in and out of cells and are involved in communication and transport between cells.
The fish oil contained in EPA-GLA+® is made from sardines and anchovies from Peru and Chile. The extraction takes place as part of an integrated production process that ensures full control from catch to finished oil.

This certified sustainability ensures, that the fishery does not affect the sea bed or causes over fishing of stocks. The certification also guarantees that all rules and environmental regulations are strictly kept in order to minimise any potential negative climate impact.
The emphasis is on safety and quality in the making of EPA-GLA+®. In order to prevent oxidation – and consequent risk of rancidity – during the production process EPA-GLA+® is made within in a protective atmosphere. This avoids contact with atmospheric oxygen and thereby prevents risk of oxidation of the oils. In addition, lecithin has a stabilizing effect on the fatty acids, which also helps prevent rancidity. These include part of the reason that EPA-GLA+® has exceptionally low peroxide values compared to other similar products. Because of current legislation, all active oils are tested for heavy metals, pesticides, etc., so the user is assured of a clean quality product.
Swallow the capsule – don’t bite it
In regard to the administration of the capsules in EPA-GLA+®, it is our recommendation that these be swallowed whole. Do not bite them, but swallow them whole – for several reasons. EPA-GLA+® contains, besides one of the very purest fish oils in the world, also natural, cold-pressed virgin Borage Oil and liquid rapeseed Lecithin. Liquid Lecithin contributes to the smell and taste. Liquid Lecithin, besides self-obvious health benefits, has the property that it increases the bioavailability of the polyunsaturated Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids supplied in EPA-GLA+®, like Lecithin is a natural antioxidant that protects the oils against rancidity.
Liquid Lecithin has a very distinctive aroma and a permanent, oily aftertaste in your mouth if you consume the product by i.e. opening or biting the capsule. In addition to the primary protection for the fatty acids against oxidation, this is the reason why the EPA-GLA+® is encapsulated in fish gelatin, rather than on bottle in liquid form.
All this should not be confused with rancidity. EPA-GLA+® is not rancid, and the product has impressive purity values.

Dietary advice from the Food Authorities
EPA and DHA are referred essential fatty acids to be supplied to the body in the form of diet and/or supplementation, since the body cannot produce these essential building blocks.
The only way to obtain enough Omega-3 is by eating fish, because the long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are found only in fish products. Food Authorities recommends eating fish two times a week for your main meal or once a week for your main meal, and almost every day as cold cuts. Vary the like between fatty fish, for example. salmon, herring and mackerel, and lean fish, for example. cod, tuna and plaice. In the course of a week, you need 200-300 g of fish. EPA-GLA+® represents a good supplement to the daily or weekly intake of fish.
